Agriculture plays a crucial role in the global carbon balance, not only as a source of emissions but also as a potential sink for atmospheric CO?. Yet, monitoring its true contribution remains a major challenge, especially across the diversity of crops, environments, and management practices. In this talk, Martín will present an approach based on multispectral vegetation indices derived from satellite imagery, linked to leaf traits and flux tower data. His research explores which indices (or combinations of them) are most effective in capturing GPP variability across crops, aiming to improve our ability to monitor carbon uptake in agroecosystems at local/regional scale.

Speaker Bio:
Martín Chávez Valenzuela is a PhD student in Biosciences at Universidad de Sonora, México, where he also teaches Plant Physiology in Agronomy. His work integrates remote sensing with a vision of agroecological transition, developing accessible tools for monitoring our rich diversity of croplands and supporting more resilient and sustainable agri-food systems.
