Nebraska sociology prepares students for leadership positions in government agencies, non-profit organizations, private enterprises, professional fields, and academia. We equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to build successful and stable careers, follow their passions, and work to make the world a better place. Much of this training happens outside of the courses students take, for example through study abroad, internships, and teaching and research opportunities. We are particularly proud of our Undergraduate Student Teaching and Research Students (USTARS) program, which gets students involved in paid and mentored research and/or teaching experiences early in their undergraduate career. This program levels the playing field; students do not have to choose between valuable experiential learning opportunities and paid employment. They get both as USTARS. Undergraduate students also benefit from department support in the form of awards, scholarships, and travel funding to attend conferences and other experiential learning opportunities.

At the graduate level, our department ranks among the nation’s leaders in student support and outcomes. We work hard to get our students involved in teaching and research collaborations with faculty; to assist with expenses for conferences, workshops, and data collection; to provide funding opportunities in the summer that allow students to continue making progress on their research and degree, and to network our students with leaders in the field from outside UNL. This support pays off. Our students go on to build successful careers in academia (at both research-intensive and small liberal arts colleges), government agencies, and for-profit and non-profit organizations.

Your gifts, big and small, make it possible for the Sociology Department to provide the high level of support that is key to student success at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The funds we receive from Glow Big Red gifts will be used to continue to offer our students assistance and highly valuable experiences outside the classroom that are key to student success.
