With over 2 million fans on TikTok, Joanne Molinaro - also known as THE KOREAN VEGAN - has appeared on the Food Network and Al Jazeera English; been featured in Salon, HEALTHY-ISH by Bon Appetit, and Kitchn; and released her cookbook + memoir The Korean Vegan Cookbook with Penguin Random House in the fall of 2021, which debuted at #3 on The New York Times “Advice, How-To & Miscellaneous” bestseller list.

On this one night, Molinaro is appearing in person before a limited audience at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. During the one-hour engagement, she will speak on stage for 50 minutes followed by a 10-minute audience Q&A.
This event is FREE for UNL students, faculty, and staff with Event Pass.

Molinaro is a Korean American woman born in Chicago, Illinois, where she continues to live today.
She began her blog THE KOREAN VEGAN in 2016 after adopting a plant-based diet. What started as a personal motivational tool to vegan-ize her favorite Korean recipes to maintain a connection with her family and culture quickly grew into something much more significant.
She created Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram accounts to post photographs of her dishes together with the recipes. In less than a year, she cultivated a modest following of approximately 10,000 and landed her first television appearance on the Food Network show “Cooks v. Cons.”
In 2017, Molinaro expanded the objective of her social media platforms to add a second and more urgent component: sharing the immigrant story. She began incorporating very short stories in the captions of her Instagram posts, often about her parents or grandparents who are immigrants from the region that today is North Korea.
The idea was to utilize her platform to provide insight into the immigrant experience in the United States, with the hope of developing empathy, compassion, and an ongoing dialogue rooted in civility and a common denominator: the love of food.
Since joining TikTok in 2020, Molinaro has amassed more than 2 million followers and tens of millions of views for her 60-second recipe videos and stories about her family.
Much like all of the ingredients that she uses in her recipes to make a delicious meal, Joanne Molinaro believes that when we revere and respect all of the different cultures and ethnicities of those around us, we can create a harmonious society that we all want to live in.
