The lecture also titled "Historia, politica y literatura en la obra de Sergio Mercado" will be followed by a reception. The event is convened to enrich the undergraduate major in Spanish, International Studies, UNL's new program of Service Learning, and the international minor in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The visit is sponsored by the Office of International Affairs, Modern Languages and Literatures, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and the Beyond Borders Student Club. Dr. Jose Angel Vargas Vargas, Director of the University of Costa Rica (UCR) is a recognized expert on contemporary literatura in Costa Rics. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Salamanca (Spain) and has published widely in journals in Costa Rica. His dissertation was published as a book in 2007. Since 2005 Dr. Vargas Vargas has held the position of Director of the Western campus of the University of Costa Rica.

American Indians have the highest risk of violent victimization, compared to all other United States Ethnic groups. Research on perception of and attitudes about violence and American Indians demonstrates ethnic differences between American Indians and the dominant culture. Legal issues hinder the ability of tribal and non-tribal law enforcement to address surrounding American Indians and violence and offer some suggestions for future research and policy change. -- Featured Speaker: Dr. Cynthia Willis-Esqueda
