Mina Kim, Post-Doctoral Faculty Fellow, will lecture on the topic “Cultural Nationalism and Modernity: Rediscovering Pan Tianshou in Twentieth Century China.”
This talk focuses on Pan Tianshou (1897-1971), who reflects the fusion of cultural nationalism and modernity, and tries to develop a new understanding of the rich artistic and intellectual intersections of China with Japan and the West/Europe in the early twentieth century. Study of the transformation of his artistic consciousness and his modern sense of identity in traditional Chinese ink painting illuminates a sophisticated ideological fluidity and artistic multiplicity.
Dr. Kim will teach a survey of Asian Art in the Department of Art & Art History in the Fall of 2016.
