Marguerite Scribante Professor of Music Paul Barnes presents a program of works new and old inspired by other pieces of music. The program begins with works inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach including pieces by Jackson Berkey of Mannheim Steamroller fame and Pepperdine’s N. Lincoln Hanks. Inspired by the mystical vision of Byzantine chant, Barnes will chant and perform Victoria Bond’s Potirion Sotiriu (The Cup of Salvation) written for Barnes. Paying homage to Chopin and emulating the beautiful arabesques found in the Chopin nocturnes, composer Ivan Moody wrote “Fioriture” for Barnes to be premiered at this recital. The recital concludes with Barnes’ solo transcription of Joan Tower’s Piano Concerto “Homage to Beethoven” where Tower references three of Beethoven’s most beloved piano sonatas.
