The UNL School of Music and Piano Professor Paul Barnes welcome the acclaimed violinist, Tim Fain and members of his creative team to campus on October 4th for a special preview of Portals. Kaneko in Omaha will present the midwest premiere performances of Portals on Oct.5-6.

Portals, a multi-media piece conceived by Fain, involves live music interacting with original video and includes a new work by award-winning composer, Philip Glass. Based on the theme of human connection in the digital age, Portals will have its world premiere performance at Symphony Space in New York on Sept. 24.

Paul Barnes’ diverse musical career has embraced the work of Philip Glass including the world premiere of his Piano Concerto No. 2. He will perform with Tim Fain Oct. 4 at the free public preview. The event will also include video footage and discussion with filmmaker Kate Hackett, actor Fred Child, the host of NPR’s Performance Today, pianist Nicholas Britell, writer Jacob Rubin, KANEKO Executive Director Hal France and the project’s Creative Producer Tim Fain.

Partita for Solo Violin by Glass along with works by contemporary American composers Aaron Jay Kernis, Nico Muhly, Kevin Puts, William Bolcom, Lev Zhurbin and Laura Karpman comprises the Portals music. The Portals video combines work by Los Angeles filmmaker Kate Hackett and New York film director Benjamin Millepied. Millepied’s distinguished career as a principal dancer and choreographer at the New York City Ballet most recently included the choreography for the Academy Award-winning film Black Swan. Writer Jacob Rubin incorporates the haunting poetry of Leonard Cohen into an original script spoken on screen by Fred Child.

For more information about the Oct. 4 preview and the performances on Oct. 5-6, 7:30 p.m. visit www.thekaneko.org or call 402-341-3800.
