Violist Clark Potter, violinist David C. Neely, mezzo-soprano Kate Butler, and pianist Ann Chang present the luscious music of the English composer and violist Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979). Rebecca Clarke is a very provocative figure in music, being one of the first female professional orchestra players when she joined the Queen’s Hall Orchestra in 1912 and one of the first female composition students of Sir Charles Villiers Stanford at the Royal College of Music. To be performed: Clarke’s prize-winning (literally, in 1919) Viola Sonata, by far her most famous piece; Dumka, (Duo Concertante for Violin and Viola, with Piano), and two song cycles: Irish Country Songs for voice and violin (arranged for viola by Potter) and Three Old English Songs for voice and violin.
