A brown-bag presentation on trees and shrubs that can take the heat will be held August 7 at noon and again at 5:30 p.m. at Morrill Hall Auditorium (UNL State Museum). Justin Evertson, green infrastructure coordinator for the Nebraska Forest Service and the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, will be talking about trees and shrubs that can survive the heat. The middle of summer is when people often realize how important shade trees are. Unfortunately, diseases, weather impacts and old age are taking their toll on our community forests. Come learn about many uncommon tree and shrub species that deserve greater planting including many that hold promise for a warming climate.
Evertson has worked with statewide tree-planting efforts for almost 20 years. He’s also planted hundreds of trees and shrubs in public landscapes of Waverly, his adopted hometown. He will share his knowledge and opinions gleaned from watching plants grow—and watching some struggle and die.
It is part of a brown-bag series on “all things green” sponsored by the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, UNL Department of Agronomy/Horticulture, UNL Garden Friends and Friends of Maxwell Arboretum.
Event sponsors hope to bring together a community of on- and off-campus people who care about the environment. There will be time for discussion at each session and, when weather permits, time to walk through the campus landscape.
Future topics include “Fascinating Insects: A Celebration of Creepy Crawlies in the Landscape” on September 4; “The How, Why and Where of Fall Color” on October 2; “Beyond Apples: the Edible Landscape” on November 6; and “Holiday Decorating & the Winter Landscape” on December 4. Locations will be at UNL’s city or east campus. Presentations will be held at noon and repeated at 5:30 p.m.
Participants are invited to bring lunch or dinner, if desired, and ideas or questions. For more information about the brown-bag series, call the Arboretum at 402-472-2971, email arboretum@unl.edu or visit arboretum.unl.edu.
