Slow Art Day is an international event with the goal of slowing down the viewing experience and engagement at art venues established in 2010 by founder Phil Terry after many beta tests in 2009.

The Great Plains Art Museum, along with the Sheldon Museum of Art, is excited to participate in this international effort to rethink how art is viewed. We invite our visitors to come into the museum and look “slowly,” for 10 minutes, at five different works.

In addition, the Great Plains encourages discussion about what visitors expect to see when they enter our space. Both exhibits on display during the day, Homefront & Battlefield and LPS Show, do not contain traditional “fine arts.”

Visitors will engage in meaningful discussions about their expectations for the role of the museum and what art is. Please join us after at Panera for a discussion of the survey and role of the museum with host Alexandra Alberda at 1 p.m.
