Workshop topic:
- As educators it is often frustrating to watch students make mistakes that could have easily been avoided if they had only reached out to the appropriate staff and requested the resources that they needed to succeed in school. However, the problem that many students encounter is that they do not know what they do not know, especially low-income and/or students of color. This interactive workshop based on research studies on social capital, hidden curriculum and mentoring will provide participants with practical skills on how they can become more effective tutors and mentors in helping students understand and navigate the culture of our education system.
- Recruitment, retention, and mentoring of first-generation students of color. Specific strategies, drawn from ten years of research, effective in enhancing student success for at-risk students on college campuses.
