In 1969, Gordon Parks became the first African American to produce and direct a major Hollywood film with “The Learning Tree.” Based on Parks’s 1963 novel of the same name, the film tells the coming-of-age story of a black teenager in Kansas in the 1920s. Dr. John Bender, UNL professor of journalism, will lead a discussion following the film.
