The Academic Activities Committee announces that this year’s Visiting Scholar program will feature Bethany Nowviskie, Director of Digital Research and Scholarship at the University of Virginia Library. In her public lecture, “A Skunk in the Library,” Nowviskie will use the example of the Scholars’ Lab at the University of Virginia to talk about a possibly rosy future for “skunkworks” operations in academic research libraries. She will discuss their relationship to scholarly R&D, the digital humanities, and the wider open source community. Her address will illuminate a host of broader issues, including the challenges to open source engagement within higher education and the age-old struggle in library IT between development and operations.
