The Domain Name System is a key component in the infrastructure of today’s internet, giving everyone on earth (and even beyond) a shared source of truth. However, its design is a product of the engineering constraints faced at the time of its inception. In the 40 years since, new challenges have arisen; the stakes are the future of the free and open internet.

In this talk, UNL Alum Mitchell Clark explores naming systems from a first principles perspective. The talk will blend fundamental computer science, systems engineering, and mechanism design. Finally, the talk will address the importance and role of civic engagement in the future of the internet.
