The Office of Research and Economic development is offering an information session focused on the National Science Foundation Research Traineeship (NRT) program, https://new.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities/national-science-foundation-research-traineeship. University of Nebraska-Lincoln faculty interested in applying to this opportunity are invited to attend the Zoom event, set for 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11.
The NRT program aims to develop ways for graduate students in research-based master’s and doctoral degree programs to develop the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed to pursue a range of STEM careers. The program emphasizes the training of STEM graduate students in high priority interdisciplinary or convergent research areas through a comprehensive traineeship model that is innovative, evidence-based, and aligned with changing workforce and research needs.
During the spring of 2024, ORED will announce a limited submission competition to identify up to four faculty teams to develop NRT proposals in response to the September 6, 2024, deadline.
The October 11 information session is hosted by the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and organized in collaboration with Montana State University (MSU); the University of Idaho (UI); the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; and Utah State University. The goal of the session is to educate faculty interested in the NRT program about what it takes to prepare a competitive proposal and lead a successful project.
During the session:
• Program officer Dr. Vinod Lohani will provide an overview of the funding opportunity, tips for success, and will offer a comparison and potential synergies between the NRT program and the Innovations in Graduate Education (IGE) program at NSF.
• A panel of PIs associated with three previously funded NRTs and an IGE will share their experiences and lessons learned while leading their projects and address participant questions. Panelists include: Dr. Craig Allen, UNL; Drs. Marjorie Matocq (NRT) and Bridget Walsh (IGE), UNR; and Dr. Brent Peyton, MSU.
