The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Psychology, Rural Drug Addiction Research Center, and Minority Health Disparities Initiative have joined forces to host a virtual lecture on “#HotGirlScience and Neighborhood Healing Community-Based Participatory Action Research Approaches to Black Sexual & Mental Health,” presented by Dr. Candice Hargons.

In this talk, Dr. Hargons will describe the #HotGirlScience paradigm - a liberation oriented Black feminist philosophy of science - informing her recent research and published studies from two community-based participatory action research projects: the Big Sex Study and the SAMHSA funded Neighborhood Healers Project. She will detail the importance and impact of working within communities on the research and outreach to enrich Black sexual and mental health. She will also discuss how these studies and approaches inform her substance use research with Black community members.

Dr. Hargons is an award-winning associate professor of counseling psychology at the University of Kentucky, where she studies sexual and mental wellness and liberation. She is the PI of the SAMHSA funded Neighborhood Healers Project, which seeks to advance mental health literacy and utilization among Black Lexingtonians.
