“Development of a Generic Energy-Absorbing Guardrail End Terminal for the Midwest Guardrail System”

This project encompassed the first phase of developing a new energy-absorbing guardrail end terminal. A literature review of existing terminals was conducted followed by brainstorming. Concepts were presented to the project sponsors and the design path was selected. Analytical calculations, physical testing of AASHTO M-180 guardrail, and finite element analysis simulations were used to develop the prototype. After review with the sponsors, additional design refinement was requested and followed with additional simulation. Conclusions and recommendations are presented for the next phase of the project.
