Dr. John Stafford is a physician-scientist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is an internist and endocrinologist. The goal of his research career is to define and target the pathways by which obesity and diabetes increase risk of non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and cardiovascular disease. One productive approach his lab has taken is to define the pathways that confer sex differences in dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis with obesity and exercise. He studies VLDL production and HDL function and how these change with obesity. Dr. Stafford is doing pre-clinical, translational and clinical research.
He is Section Chief of Endocrine and Director of the Lipid Clinic at the Tennessee Valley VA hospital where he sees patients with genetic dyslipidemia, diabetic dyslipidemia, and high cardiovascular risk.
