The German Language and Culture Interest Group will meet on Wednesday, March 20, 3 p.m., at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 144 M St. There is limited lower level parking, with the entry site on the West side of the Church, off 11th St.

Peter Reinkordt, professor emeritus of languages at Doane University, will led a discussion on the film “Never Look Away.” While the film ended its run at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Center on March 14, it not critical to have seen the movie beforehand, as the discussion will focus on German history and culture. All OLLI members and guests are welcome.

“Never Look Away,” an Academy Award nominee for best foreign language film., is inspired by real events and spans three eras of German history. The film tells the story of a young art student who falls in love with fellow student named Ellie. Ellie’s father, a famous doctor, is dismayed at his daughter’s choice of boyfriend, and vows to destroy the relationship. What neither of them knows is that their lives are already connected through a terrible crime Seeband committed decades ago.

The film explores subject matter that is both unusual and compellingly ambitious, spanning three decades of German post-war history in a suspense-packed drama. It also makes use of a sweeping historical backdrop to tell a highly personal and emotional story through the portrayal of three human destinies.
