The October meeting of the OLLI Politics Interest Group will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17, 3 p.m., at Stauffer’s Café & Pie Shoppe, 5600 S. 48th Street. Marvin Almy will be leading this month’s discussion. All OLLI members who like to talk politics are welcome to come.

Here’s some of the things we’ll be talking about:

1. What should be the strategy of the Democratic majority in the House of Representatives? Should they proceed with a formal impeachment indictment against President Trump which would face almost certain acquittal in the Republican controlled Senate or should they concentrate on defeating Mr. Trump in the Election of Nov. 2020?
2.
Here’s the view of George Will on that topic – read the column from the “Washington Post” and also click on the You Tube video.

2. “True Nebraskans” are circulating a petition for a constitutional amendment giving all Nebraskans a rebate on their state income tax of 35% of the property tax they have paid. It’s estimated that would cost the state over $1.5 billion. What’s your expectation? Will it make it onto the ballot in Nov. 2020 and if it does will it pass? Here’s an update from Paul Hammel in the “Omaha World Herald” –

3. The National Basketball Association (NBA) has gotten itself in a terrible fix with China over a tweet that Daryl Morey, the general manager of the Houston Rockets, sent saying “Fight for Freedom. Stand with Hong Kong.” China reacted angrily and started cancelling telecasts of NBA games in China and demanding apologies. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who was in Japan on his way to a game in Shanghai, profusely apologized to China but said Morey was entitled to his free speech. It’s a question of profit vs. values? The NBA did over $4 billion in Chinese broadcasts and merchandise sales last year!

4. I We’ll take a stab at ranking Democratic Presidential candidates. Has Bernie’s heart attack upset the standings?
