Time:

ConnectioN Point
1333 N. 33rd St

Come to the Human Rights Day celebration on December 16, at ConnectionN Point, 1333 N. 33rd St., from 7-8:30 p.m., to learn about the efforts being made to monitor the state of human rights around the world.

Human Rights Day was proclaimed by the United Nations to celebrate the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948.

Freedom House, founded in New York in 1941, publishes an annual report “Freedom in the World” that provides an assessment of human rights globally and in each individual country. Freedom House with offices in New York and Washington, DC has been publishing these annual reports since 1973.

Human Rights Watch, also based in New York, with offices around the world has also been publishing its “World Report” since 2006. It is an annual review of human rights around the world. Human Rights Watch was founded in 1978 and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997.

The two organizations have been publishing an annual assessment of the status of global political rights and civil liberties.

Marv Almy, OLLI member, will provide an overview of Human Rights Watch and Freedom House and compare and contrast the differing views regarding how the U.S. is doing in the area of Human Rights. He will walk us through their websites which rate countries on their progress or decline in pursuit of Human Rights.

Christy Hargesheimer, retired associate professor, Doane University, will tell us about people who have been identified by Amnesty International as persons whose human rights have been violated.

Do you want to take a guess at how the U.S. scored in 2018 with all the attacks on the press and the conditions at the U.S. Southern border?
