Dr. Philip Sapirstein will present a public lecture titled “3D Modeling of Ancient Architecture: The Temple of Hera at Olympia.” The lecture will be at 5:30 p.m. on January 30th in Richards Hall 14.

The Digital Architecture Project, affiliated with UNL’s Center for Digital Research in the Humanities, is a new initiative seeking to examine the origins of the Doric architectural style in ancient Greek sanctuaries. Sapirstein will present new results from this July’s survey of the Hera Temple at Olympia, among the first and best-preserved recognizably Doric monuments in the Greek world. He used photogrammetry–a powerful new technique to create detailed 3D models from photographs–to document the temple. The results challenge a century-old theory about the history of the building, and the models reveal design features overlooked in previous studies. Dr. Sapirstein will discuss the importance of this project to our understanding of the origins of Doric architecture, and comment on the exciting potential of photogrammetry for analysis and publication of ancient art and architecture.
