Caryn Outten of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of South Carolina will speak. Outten’s research group is focused on two mains areas: mitochondrial glutathione metabolism and control of iron homeostasis in the model eukaryote S. cerevisiae (baker’s yeast). Her Ph.D. work in metalloregulatory protein mechanisms and bioinorganic chemistry was completed at Northwestern University while my postdoctoral research in yeast molecular genetics and oxidative stress response mechanisms was conducted at Johns Hopkins University. She recently received a 2009 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.
