The Fenton lab focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of allosteric regulation of medically relevant systems. Enzymes that regulate metabolic flux have been a favored target in these studies. Pyruvate kinase catalyses the last step in glycolysis and its regulation is required in the liver where both glycolysis and gluconenogenesis occurs. Drug activationof liver pyruvate kinase has the potential to contribute to reducing hepatic glucose production and reduce hyperglycemia in diabetic patients.
