LGBTQA+ 101 Workshop to be held September 26th at 2pm in TEAC 250. Come learn more about how to be inclusive with regards to sexuality and gender beyond the binary.

Dean Jones announced her intention to make diversity and equity a priority in CEHS this year so that we can achieve our goal of being leaders across campus in this area. In order to achieve this, each of us in CEHS, can do our part by committing to increasing our knowledge and skills to support diversity and inclusion. As many know, the demographics of college student body are changing so keeping up with the latest concepts, terminology, and strategies to support students requires an ongoing effort. To help increase awareness, knowledge and skills related to diversity and inclusion, CEHS AFIRE (Advocating for Inclusion, Respect, and Equity) is offering several workshops over the course of the year.

The first workshop, cohosted by EDPS DEMAC, is LGBTQA+ 101. This workshop, conducted by the UNL LGBTQA+ Resource Center, will provide information to attendees on supportive language and campus climate related to sexuality and gender beyond the binary. The workshop explores distinctions between sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, and sex/gender assigned at birth. It offers information about inclusive language, using affirming gender pronouns, data on campus climate, and resources available at the Center. This workshop is appropriate for faculty, staff, and students who want to be supportive of sexual and gender diversity but may not have thought much about these identities before. It also is great for someone who has been familiar with these identities but may not be up to date on current campus climate or changes in promising practices.

CEHS AFIRE is a grassroots organization of students, staff, and faculty formed in CEHS to advocate for diversity and equity. We raise concerns, organize professional development, and advocate for equitable policies changes and individuals who experience bias. Join AFIRE by emailing afire@unl.edu.
