“Intermodal Freight Logistics Modeling”

Abstract: Invented in the middle of the last century, the concept of containerization has enabled goods to be transported inside twenty- or forty-foot container units, facilitating the transfer of goods between different transportation modes (e.g., highway, rail, and water) at intermodal facilities. Intermodal freight logistics is the backbone of the modern domestic and international freight industries. The recent supply chain disruptions have highlighted the role of intermodal freight logistics and the need for its resilience – the ability to adjust quickly and efficiently to changing levels and patterns of supply and demand. In this talk, I will discuss my past, recent, and ongoing research in the area of intermodal freight logistics. I will also share initiatives that I am pursuing which could be strengthened through collaboration with the UNL School of Computing faculty.

Biography: Nathan Huynh is the Director of the Nebraska Transportation Center and the Keith W. Klaasmeyer Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UNL. Prior to his appointment at UNL, he was a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of South Carolina. His professional appointments include serving as the Special Projects Manager and Systems Analyst at the Port of Houston Authority. His primary research areas are freight logistics, intermodal freight terminal design and operations, and connected and coordinated multimodal systems. His secondary research areas are climate resilience and sustainability, traffic safety, and transportation equity. Nathan Huynh received his Ph.D. and M.Sc. from the University of Texas at Austin in Transportation Engineering and a B.S. from Temple University in Civil Engineering.
