Strategic Technological Collaborations to Create Sustainable Solutions for Critical Societal Challenges

Abstract: We are facing a multitude of societal challenges that threaten food and nutrition security, environmental sustainability and subsequently the health and wellness of animals and human beings. Advanced and emerging technologies (such as sensor, Artificial intelligence, information and IOT etc.) have capabilities to contribute to the desired solutions. This presentation will reflect on selected technological developments of AI, sensors, and information technologies for contamination related environmental sustainability applications. The associated challenges with the translation of the developed technologies in a typical university ecosystem will be presented. The need for interdisciplinary collaborations and associated strategy within a land-grant university platform to create innovative solutions for complex societal challenges will be discussed.

Dr. Suranjan Panigrahi is a professor in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology at Purdue University, USA. He has 30 plus years of comprehensive experience in research, teaching and outreach and administration.

He has cross-disciplinary training and expertise in engineering, biological systems, sensors, electronics, intelligent information technologies, and management science. He leads a multidisciplinary facility “Integrated Sensing and Smart Solutions Laboratory” at Purdue University. His research focuses on intelligent sensors, informatics, smart systems, intelligent model and devices for biological, safety and healthcare systems. As an innovator and inventor of multiple technologies, His group adopts interdisciplinary systems-based approach in creating solutions. He is the lead inventor of 3 approved U.S. patents. He has authored more than 180 technical papers, publications, book chapters including patents and software. He was the founder/director of an interdisciplinary research center “Bio-imaging and Sensing center” at North Dakota State University (USA) for 9 years. He has provided leadership in multiple professional technical committees. He is a member of multiple professional organizations and a member of the Gamma Sigma Delta Honor society.
