Our May Seminar Series event will feature a presentation on “Substance Use and the Influence on Rurality,” by Lisa McFadden. She is an Associate Professor within the Division of Basic Biomedical Sciences at the Sanford School of Medicine.

In this talk, Dr. McFadden will explore the intersection between the COVID-19 pandemic and rurality in relation to substance use disorders. These findings will shed light on the challenges and strengths of rural communities in the Midwest when it comes to supporting individuals with substance use disorders.

Dr. Lisa McFadden is also the co-director of the SPURA undergraduate research fellowship program sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the G-RISE program sponsored by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. Her laboratory’s research focuses on substance use disorders. The techniques utilized span from preclinical models to wastewater and informatics. Ultimately, the goal of this research is to develop more effective and accessible interventions and treatments to help those with substance use disorders.
