This session will educate attendees about workers’
rights under the anti-discrimination provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act. A representative from the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division’s Immigrant and Employee Rights Section (IER) (formerly named the Office of Special Counsel for Immigration-Related Unfair Employment
Practices) will describe prohibited conduct under the anti-discrimination provision, and how IER assists workers discriminated against based on their national origin or citizenship status. The IER representative will also discuss free resources relating to this law, including for those who have limited English proficiency, such as IER’s worker hotline. In addition to providing the public information on the law that IER enforces, IER’s hotline intervention program informally resolves problems. Examples of issues that IER may be able to assist with include when an employer: requests a DHS-issued document for Form I-9 documentation, rejects a worker’s driver’s license and unrestricted Social Security card as valid Form I-9 documentation, attempts to re-verify a permanent resident card or engages in discrimination during E-Verify process. The session will last from 30-45 minutes and be accompanied by a power-point.
