Title: Beyond Matroids

Matroids were defined in the 1930s as a generalization of linear independence. They have been studied extensively since and have applications in many different fields. The purpose of this talk is to generalize this to independence over the Boolean and other semirings. There are connections with many areas of mathematics which will be discussed in the talk.

Refreshments will be served 3:30-4:00 in Avery 348. The talk is free and open to the public.
