Title: An introduction to uniqueness theorems for graph algebras

Additional Public Info:

Abstract: The study of C*-algebras dates back to the 1930’s and was motivated by
applications to quantum mechanics. Since that time the theory has
blossomed, providing connections between functional analysis and many
other areas of mathematics, including algebra and dynamical systems.

Graph algebras — C*-algebras defined via directed graphs — include the
algebras studied by Cuntz and Krieger in the late 1970’s and 1980s and
comprise a large collection of C^*-algebras. These algebras are
particularly suitable for analysis, as many aspects of their structure can
be read from combinatorial properties of the underlying graphs.

In this talk, we will provide a brief and gentle introduction to
C*-algebras, an overview of the construction of graph algebras, and a
picture of the notion of (the more general) k-graph algebras. Finally, we
will state some uniqueness theorems, proved in joint work with Jon Brown
and Gabriel Nagy, for these algebras.

Refreshments will be served in 348 Avery 3:30-4:00 pm.
The talk is free and open to the public.
