Title: Groups and spheres

Additional Public Info:

Abstract: The question of the way groups can act on spheres has been part of topology and representation theory from the beginnings of the subjects. Taking a very crude view, there are enough group actions to show that they are an excellent guide to forming analogies between algebra and topology. These analogies have been fruitful in topology since they permit topologists to import the methods of commutative algebra, and they have been fruitful in algebra since topological methods flow back, leading to the consideration of homotopy invariant methods in algebra. The talk will provide some concrete illustrations of this philosophy.

Refreshments will be served in 348 Avery 3:30-4pm.
The talk is free and open to the public.
