Title: Peridynamics as a Multiscale Theory
Additional Public Info:
A familiar feature of the peridynamic theory of solid mechanics is the inherent length scale called the “horizon” within a constitutive model. The horizon represents the maximum distance for direct interactions between material particles. The possibility of changing the horizon within a body may therefore offer potential as a consistent way of formulating the transition between multiple length scales. This talk will cover recent work on a computational multiscale method within peridynamics that incorporates a tightly connected sequence of models with different length scales. Upscaling of the peridynamic material properties in a heterogeneous medium, including damage, will be discussed. Computational examples demonstrate the application of the method to fracture, fragmentation, and impact mechanics. Recent simulations of fractographic features resulting from dynamic brittle fracture will be presented.
Refreshments will be served 3:30-4:00 in 348 Avery. This talk is free and open to the public.
