Michael Neubert, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, will present “Spatial Bioeconomic Models for Fisheries Management.”

The effective management of marine fisheries is an ongoing challenge at the intersection of biology, economics, and policy. One way in which fish stocks—and their habitats—can be protected is through the establishment of marine reserves, areas that are closed to fishing. Theoretical work in this area has shown that the establishment of marine reserves for conservation purposes does not necessarily require a reduction in economic productivity. It is fair to say that the implementation and design of actual marine reserve networks has been motivated and guided in large part by bioeconomic theory.
