Peridynamic Modeling of the Mechanics of Soft Materials

Abstract: Peridynamics is a nonlocal extension of continuum mechanics that enables the direct modeling of damage and long-range internal forces in materials by direct application of its basic field equations. A key property of the theory is the compatibility of the method with geometrical nonlinearity, that is, arbitrarily large rotations and changing connectivity between different parts of a region. This property of peridynamics creates useful capabilities in the computational modeling of highly deformable materials.

This talk will present some highlights of material modeling in peridynamics for soft materials and fluids. Examples will demonstrate application to diverse problems such as bird strike on aircraft, compaction of powders, manufacturing processes such as cutting and grinding, and the counterintuitive behavior of crack propagation in rubber.
