The UNL Symphony Orchestra in the Glenn Korff School of Music opens its 2013-14 season on Saturday, October 12 with a 7:30 PM concert in Kimball Recital Hall entitled, “A Pair of Centennials—and the Biggest Classic of Them All.” The program opens with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67, in its seldom-performed original version. On the second half of the program, the orchestra commemorates the 100th birthday of the 20th-century Polish master Witold Lutoslawski with a performance of the composer’s Livre pour orchestre (Book for orchestra). Livre, composed in 1968, is an unforgettably dramatic evocation of that turbulent year, and a moving evocation of the power of the human spirit. The concert concludes with Benjamin Britten’s Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell, a popular virtuoso showpiece perhaps better known by its alternate title, “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.”

General admission is $5, $3 for students and seniors.
