UNL Larson Professor of Flute John Bailey will present an evening of flute chamber music in lieu of his annual recital of flute and piano music. His usual collaborator, piano professor Mark Clinton, is on faculty development leave, so Bailey decided to call on several of his esteemed colleagues to perform on a program Bailey calls “Flute and Friends.”

In addition to performing a single piece for flute alone (by living American composer Katherine Hoover), Bailey will be joined by organist Christopher Marks (on three short pieces by French composer Jehan Alain). In addition, he and Marks will perform a lovely light piece for harpsichord, flute, and clarinet (with clarinetist Diane Barger) by French composer Florent Schmitt. Also on the program: a work for flute and bass (with bassist Hans Sturm), and for flute and percussion (with percussionist David Hall).

“I’m excited to work with these two faculty members, with whom I have not collaborated before, and to bring to life some repertoire that doesn’t get performed that often,” Bailey said.

Also on the program, a fairy tale for flute and narrator (voice professor Donna Harler-Smith) by English composer Alan Ridout. Bailey adds: “This turned out to be a recital entirely of 20th-century works, but the variety of colors, styles, and forms is truly eclectic.”
