The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Glenn Korff School of Music Campus Bands will perform a two-part concert featuring the music of Copland, De Falla, Giroux, Maslanka, Yagisawa, and many others on Thursday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall. The bands take the names of UNL Directors of Band Emeriti.
The first half of the program presented by the Donald A. Lentz Concert Band is titled “Home: Caring for the Earth and Its Inhabitants” hoping the music will affect reflection upon how we steward our planet and treat all who live on it. The music of one of America’s giant composers, Aaron Copland (The Promise of Living from The Tenderland) will be performed along side Satoshi Yagisawa’s Hymn to the Infinite Sky. The band will close its portion of the night with David Maslanka’s joyous Mother Earth (A Fanfare).
Following a brief intermission, the Jack R. Snider Concert Band will take the stage and present “Transformation”. This portion features the music of Buckley, Collins, and Mairs and features Ritual Fire Dance by Spanish composer Manuel De Falla. The evening will come to a dramatic close as the band performs Travis Cross’s Everlasting Light
Both bands are under the direction of Assistant Director of Bands, Douglas W. Bush who shares conducting duties with Conducting Associates Sarah Aymond, Christopher Brandt, and Rubén Dario Gómez. Tickets are $3 for students/senior adults and $5 for general admission.
The Campus Band is the university’s largest concert band. Its select mission is to provide a high quality performance venue for musicians representing a wide array of musical backgrounds and major fields of study within the university. The objectives of the Campus Band are to provide an opportunity for instrumentalists of diverse abilities and interests an opportunity to perform quality literature, and to hone their technical and musical skills through the rehearsal process; to provide a laboratory environment for music education students to gain vital performance experience on secondary instruments; to encourage members of the university’s athletic bands to maintain a high level of musical activity throughout the year; and to serve as a resource for music educators and aspiring teachers through the study and performance of high quality repertoire appropriate for developing ensembles.
