The goal of this summer camp is to give high school students (Grades 9-12) the opportunity to learn about food science while experiencing authentic, hands-on learning activities. Students will follow the production and processing chains for grain products throughout the continuum from field to table learning how science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are intertwined to transform raw agricultural commodities into food products that are consumed daily.

For more than 14 years, each summer 100+ youths attend YNS camps, which include hands-on science experiences and recreation opportunities at college campuses throughout Nebraska. Camp fees include meals and lodging, except “day” camps (see yns.nebraska.edu/camps for specifics). For most YNS camps, applications close either May 1 or when camp fills.

YNS is conducted by Nebraska EPSCoR to encourage youth participation in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning and careers. National Science Foundation funding (via OIA-2044049) helps keep YNS camp fees low; need-based scholarships for YNS camps are readily available. Faculty from Nebraska colleges and universities are YNS camp leaders, and camp staffs include university students. YNS camps and high school researchers follow the safety protocols of the campus where they are hosted.
