Kirby Krogstad, Michigan State University PhD student, will discuss the digestibility of pelleted distillers grain.

Pelleting is often done because it improves feed handling and transportation conditions by increasing feed density and decreasing feed shrink; both of which reduce feed costs for producers. Beyond those logistic advantages, recent experiments have investigated the effects of pelleting feeds on digestibility and animal performance for dairy cattle. Evidence suggests that pelleting feeds may enhance fiber digestibility which may increase the value of the feed. This presentation will review the pelleting process, explore experiments evaluating pelleting’s effect on feeds, and the effect of feeding meal vs. pelleted feeds.
