Soft Pretzels

Learn the art of making soft pretzels, a traditional German New Year’s food. This food product can be entered in either 4-H Cooking 301 and/or Cooking 401 at the county fair and if eligible, at the state fair.
Instructor: Sarah Purcell, Extension Educator

Materials needed: You can make your pretzels during the workshop or use the information and wait until later. Please make sure you have your parent’s permission to use the oven. If making the pretzels during the workshop, you will need: 1 package active dry yeast, 1 1/3 cups warm water (105 to 115 degrees F.), 1 tablespoon sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 3 1/2 - 4 cups unsifted all-purpose flour, 1 egg, 1 tablespoon water, 2 tablespoons coarse salt, two large baking sheets, pot holders or oven mitts, large bowl, small bowl, rubber spatula, wooden spoon, measuring cups, liquid measure, butter knife and pastry brush. Make sure you have a clean surface or wooden board to place your dough on to knead.
