On the Coherence Properties of Thermal Radiation Near Surfaces

Comprehensive Exam

Date:
Time:

Abstract:
What is the radiation field close to the surface? One review paper describes the near field is surprisingly coherent.1 A more recent paper States that the Near-Field for a surface of a designed material is that of a blackbody radiator2. How does this work? What parameters control the switch of behavior? In the following report I will shed light on these questions and show the material, and surface wave properties that give rise the temporal and spatial coherent behavior near surfaces.
