This luncheon presentation, brought to you by the Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED) and the Methodology and Evaluation Research Core (MERC) Facility, will provide an overview of formative and outcome evaluation practices for broader impacts activities. Case studies will showcase examples of using formative evaluation to improve program implementation and using outcome results to secure additional funding. The presentation will also provide an overview of estimates for timeline and costs to anticipate when planning for the evaluation of broader impacts activities.

About Broader Impacts
Broader impacts encompass the potential of proposed research to benefit society and contribute to the achievement of desired societal outcomes. As the focus on broader impacts increases, the expectation that projects have a mechanism in place to assess the success of these activities also increases. All proposals submitted to the National Science Foundation (NSF) must address a project’s broader impacts. Other sponsors (e.g., the U.S. Department of Agriculture) are also beginning to consider broader impacts during proposal review.

About the Presenter
Trish Wonch Hill is the Interim Director of MERC. Dr. Wonch Hill is a certified evaluator and directs evaluation projects on a wide variety of topics, including health, STEM education, and training grants.
