Lincoln is the host city for the Mid-year Conference of The National Congress of American Indians (http://www.ncai.org/) June 17-20, 2012! This is going to be an exciting event for the City of Lincoln as they are expecting 800-1200 tribal leaders from across the country to attend. The conference will be held at the Cornhusker. There are also going to be some cultural events held around the city and state.
NDE is notifying us for two reasons: 1) to notify you of the events and invite you to participate and 2) to recruit volunteers.
Cultural Events:
Sunday evening, June 17th—Welcome Reception Powwow—this event will be open to the public. The dancing is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
Great Plains Cultural Center—Jurried Art Show will be on display for the duration of the conference.
Monday and Tuesday evenings there will also be Hand Games and Gourd Dancing at the Lincoln Indian Center starting at 7:00 p.m. and these will also be open to the public.
There will be a Tradeshow and Marketplace set up as part of the Convention that is open to the public. For those of you who are interested in beadwork and jewelry this is the place for you!
Volunteer Opportunities:
Saturday, June 16th members of the Local Planning Committee will be stuffing participant bags at 1:00 p.m. at the Cornhusker. This should take about 1-2 hours.
Saturday, June 16th there will be two bus tours for NCAI participants. One will be going to Kearney to the Dancers of the Plains event and one will be going to Winnebago to tour Ho Chunk Inc headquarters, Winnebago Public School, and the Winnebago Health Care facility. Carol Remp is in need of 1 person to serve as a host on each of these tours. Your duties will be to ensure that the participants each receive a “guest bag” that will contain information about the sites they are visiting, start the DVD of Standing Bear’s Footsteps, and introduce the group to the local coordinators in Kearney and Winnebago. Carol will meet with volunteers and go over all the details/specifics. It won’t be a hard job and should be lots of fun.
Additional note—If you help with the Bag Stuffing on Saturday you are also invited to attend the Opening Ceremonies on Monday at the Cornhusker without paying a registration fee. This will be a wonderful cultural experience for you!
