Blended/Hybrid classes combine the best of in-person and technology enhanced teaching and learning. Well done these types of classes can increase student learning and engagement, impacting student achievement and retention. The format can also help the campus deal with the classroom usage demands resulting from increased enrollments.

The Office of Online & Distance Education is sponsoring a Blended Learning Colloquium February 28th that will focus on issues impacting the implementation of blended teaching strategies. As part of this Colloquium, faculty will have the opportunity to
· Share specific challenges they face with the blending of their courses
· Learn from the experiences of others
· Participate in course-specific Q&A time
· Examine example course materials, such as syllabi and processes for course development

The luncheon and interactive sessions will concentrate on the specifics of implementing blended learning in classrooms of all sizes and disciplines.

Luncheon Details: During the panel luncheon, UNL faculty who have taught blended courses will share their efforts, and the panelists will engage in an extended Q&A session with the audience and with the nationally recognized guest speakers.

Interactive Sessions: Each guest speaker will facilitate one of the interactive sessions (see bios below). You are welcome to select the session that most closely fits with your discipline and interests. The Interactive Sessions will focus on the specific challenges faculty face as well as demonstrate detailed examples from several redesign projects.

Guest Speakers
Dr. Ivan Shibley, Jr., Associate Professor of Chemistry, Penn State
Dr. Shibley has won several awards for his teaching, including the Eisenhower Award, which is presented to a tenured Penn State faculty member who exhibits excellent teaching as well as mentoring other teachers. He received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from East Carolina University, and he now teaches organic chemistry, biochemistry, philosophy of science, bioethics, and the senior science seminar. Dr. Shibley presents his work on blended learning at numerous professional conferences and has become a leading advocate of blended learning.

Dr. Alicia Cipria Associate Professor of Spanish Linguistics, Department of Modern Languages & Classics, The University of Alabama
Dr. Cipria holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics from The Ohio State University, specializing in the semantics of verb tense and aspect. She has been involved with the Roadmap to Redesign (R2R) for three large courses of Spanish at the elementary level since its conception in 2004. After the official R2R project finished successfully, she continued working on the refinement of the hybrid/blended courses that resulted from the original project. The hybrid format is still the norm for Elementary Spanish at The University of Alabama and has enabled the department to accommodate an ever-growing student enrollment.
