Shela Shanks will talk about the relationship between inner change, empowerment and societal change applying principles from Buddhist philosophy.

She returned to Nebraska in 2012 after living in New York for almost 30 years. As an attorney, she worked on women’s rights issues through her work for Lawyers Without Borders and pro bono clients of the law firm where she was employed.

Between 2006-2012 she attended United Nations Commission on Status of Women (CSW) as a presenter, panelist, and workshop facilitator. The workshop she developed for the CSW 55th session, entitled “Empowering Women and Girls Through Dialogue”, was used as a prototype for use by civil society organizations in several African countries. For over 30 years, she has been a member of the women’s division of a lay international Buddhist organization and NGO member of the United Nations dedicated to world peace, where she has engaged in leadership development, interfaith programs , cultural and educational events to advance respect for women, peace-building, and an equitable society.
