Talk Title: An immunologist’s take on development of gnotobiotic models of disease

Summary: Dr. Price’s research has largely focused on the regulation of the immune system by interactions between components of innate and adaptive immunity. The intestinal microbiota interacts with both innate and adaptive immune cells within the gut, and has a profound effect on both development of the immune system and the incidence and severity of a range of diseases. The Nebraska Gnotobiotic Mouse Program (NGMP) is researching the effects of microbial species within the gut on a range of disease models in mice. Dr. Price is leading collaborative efforts with researchers at several universities to delineate the effects of microbial populations on metabolic disease, alcohol use disorder, and multiple sclerosis; as well as answering basic questions about nutrient utilization by bacteria and how the microbiome adapts to specific host species. He has also been developing an immune-mediated model of inflammatory bowel disease for use in germ-free mice which have been conventionalized with gut microbes, working to expand the experimental capacity of the NGMP.

An in-person reception will be hosted at 11:30am, outside FIC 277 auditorium on Innovation Campus.
